SHBG Gene

Meaning

The SHBG Gene, formally known as the Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin gene, provides the genetic blueprint for synthesizing the SHBG protein, a glycoprotein primarily produced in the liver. This protein is the principal transport vehicle for sex steroid hormones, including testosterone and estradiol, in the bloodstream. Genetic variations in the SHBG gene can lead to altered circulating levels of the binding protein, thereby profoundly influencing the bioavailability of active sex hormones to target tissues.
