SHBG Dysregulation

Meaning

SHBG dysregulation refers to any pathological state characterized by an abnormal concentration of Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) in the circulation, resulting in a clinically significant alteration of free, biologically active steroid hormone levels. Either an abnormally high or low concentration of this liver-synthesized glycoprotein directly impacts the bioavailability of hormones like testosterone and estradiol, leading to conditions such as hyperandrogenism in women or functional hypogonadism in men. This dysregulation is a critical indicator of underlying metabolic and endocrine health issues, including insulin resistance and thyroid dysfunction.
