SHBG Bioavailability

Meaning

SHBG Bioavailability refers to the dynamic interaction between Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), a glycoprotein synthesized primarily by the liver, and its functional capacity to bind to and thus inactivate sex steroids, specifically testosterone and estradiol, thereby modulating their biological availability to target tissues. High circulating SHBG levels reduce the concentration of free, bioactive hormones, while conversely, low levels increase it, impacting tissue exposure. This bioavailability is a critical, often overlooked, determinant of a patient’s effective hormonal status, regardless of their total hormone levels.
