SHBG Binding Affinity

Meaning

The strength of the biochemical attraction and subsequent bond between Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG), a glycoprotein synthesized in the liver, and its primary target hormones, particularly testosterone and estradiol. A high binding affinity means more sex hormone is tightly bound and rendered biologically inactive, reducing the concentration of free and active hormone available to target tissues. This affinity is a critical determinant of hormonal bioavailability and clinical symptomology.
