SHBG and Insulin

Meaning

Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, or SHBG, is a glycoprotein primarily synthesized by the liver, responsible for binding and transporting sex steroid hormones, including testosterone and estradiol, in the bloodstream, thereby regulating their bioavailable fraction. Insulin, a peptide hormone produced by the pancreatic beta cells, plays a central role in glucose homeostasis, facilitating the uptake of glucose into cells and regulating carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism. The relationship between these two critical molecules is inversely correlated; elevated insulin levels typically suppress hepatic SHBG production, leading to lower circulating SHBG concentrations.
