SGLT2 Inhibitors

Meaning

SGLT2 Inhibitors are a class of oral medications that selectively block the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 protein, which is predominantly expressed in the proximal tubules of the kidneys. These agents are clinically utilized to treat type 2 diabetes, and increasingly, heart failure and chronic kidney disease, by reducing the reabsorption of glucose from the filtrate back into the bloodstream. This mechanism results in increased glucose excretion in the urine, leading to lower blood glucose levels and additional cardiovascular benefits.
