Sex Hormones

Meaning

Sex hormones are a critical group of steroid hormones, primarily androgens, estrogens, and progestogens, synthesized mainly in the gonads and adrenal glands, that regulate sexual development, reproductive function, and secondary sex characteristics. These hormones, however, also exert profound systemic effects on bone density, cardiovascular risk, metabolic health, and cognitive function in all individuals. Maintaining a balanced profile of sex hormones is a core tenet of hormonal health across the lifespan.
