Sex Hormone Bio-Availability

Meaning

Sex Hormone Bio-Availability is the fraction of circulating sex hormones, primarily testosterone and estrogen, that is unbound to carrier proteins, such as Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) and albumin, and is therefore biologically active and able to diffuse into target tissues. This is the clinically relevant measure of hormonal status, as only the bioavailable fraction can interact with cellular receptors to exert its physiological effects. Maintaining optimal bioavailability is critical for sexual, cognitive, and metabolic health.
