Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG)

Meaning

A glycoprotein synthesized primarily by the liver that circulates in the bloodstream and binds with high affinity to sex hormones, notably testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol. SHBG acts as a transport protein and a key regulator of the bioavailability of these steroids, determining the amount of ‘free’ or biologically active hormone available to target tissues. Its concentration is a critical clinical marker for assessing endocrine status.
