Serum Potassium

Meaning

The measured concentration of the electrolyte potassium (K+) within the fluid portion of the blood, or serum, which serves as a critical clinical indicator of the body’s overall potassium balance. This balance is determined by the interplay between dietary intake, cellular translocation, and renal excretion. Potassium is the principal intracellular cation, essential for maintaining cellular membrane potential, regulating nerve impulse transmission, and ensuring proper muscle and cardiac function.
