Serum CTX

Meaning

Serum CTX, or C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, represents a specific biochemical marker derived from the degradation of type I collagen, the primary protein component of bone matrix. Its presence in the bloodstream indicates ongoing bone resorption, reflecting the activity of osteoclasts in breaking down bone tissue. This measurement provides a direct assessment of the rate at which old bone is being removed from the skeletal system.
