Serum Amyloid P

Meaning

Serum Amyloid P (SAP) is a highly conserved, non-fibrillar glycoprotein belonging to the pentraxin family of plasma proteins, primarily synthesized by the liver and circulating as a component of the acute-phase response. Clinically, SAP is known for its high affinity for amyloid fibrils, and its persistent presence is associated with the stability of pathological amyloid deposits in various organs. While its exact physiological role is complex, its concentration is often monitored as a general indicator of systemic inflammation and its potential contribution to protein deposition diseases.
