Sertoli Cells

Meaning

Sertoli cells are specialized somatic cells found within the seminiferous tubules of the testes, often referred to as “nurse cells.” Their primary function is to support, nourish, and regulate the development of germ cells through the complex process of spermatogenesis. These cells form the critical blood-testis barrier, an immunological shield that protects developing sperm from the immune system. Sertoli cells also produce essential hormones and growth factors, including inhibin, which provides negative feedback to the pituitary. Their integrity is vital for male fertility.
