Sertoli Cell

Meaning

Sertoli cells are a specialized population of somatic cells located within the seminiferous tubules of the male testes, playing a pivotal role in supporting spermatogenesis and male reproductive endocrinology. Functionally, they are often referred to as “nurse cells” because they provide structural support, nourishment, and regulatory signals to the developing germ cells. They also form the tight junctions that constitute the blood-testis barrier, a crucial immunological separation. Their activity is directly regulated by Follicle-Stimulating Hormone ($text{FSH}$) and local androgen concentrations.
