Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

Meaning

Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SRIs) are a class of psychotropic medications that function primarily by selectively blocking the reabsorption of the neurotransmitter serotonin by the presynaptic neuron in the central nervous system. This action increases the concentration of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, thereby enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission. SRIs are widely prescribed for the clinical management of major depressive disorder, anxiety, and certain hormonal-related mood disturbances.
