Serotonin Deficiency

Meaning

Serotonin deficiency is a clinical state characterized by inadequate levels or reduced functional activity of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. This deficiency is strongly implicated in the pathophysiology of mood disorders, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and appetite dysregulation. Given the intricate link between the nervous and endocrine systems, a serotonin imbalance can indirectly affect the hypothalamic-pituitary axes and overall well-being.
