Serotonergic Transmission

Meaning

Serotonergic Transmission describes the chemical communication process between neurons that is mediated by the neurotransmitter serotonin, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). This extensive signaling system is fundamentally involved in regulating a broad spectrum of central nervous system functions, including mood state, appetite control, sleep architecture, and the complex neuroendocrine regulation of pituitary hormone secretion. Functional dysregulation in serotonergic transmission is a core component implicated in numerous psychiatric, metabolic, and neuroendocrine disorders.
