Serotonergic Regulation

Meaning

Serotonergic regulation refers to the homeostatic control and modulation of various physiological and psychological processes mediated by the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) throughout the central nervous system and peripheral tissues. Serotonin is a key chemical messenger responsible for regulating mood, sleep architecture, appetite control, and gut motility. Effective serotonergic regulation is crucial for emotional stability and is notably influenced by the cyclical and life-stage actions of sex steroid hormones, particularly estrogen.
