Serotonergic Dysregulation

Meaning

Serotonergic dysregulation refers to an imbalance or malfunctioning within the neurotransmitter system governed by serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT), a critical signaling molecule involved in mood, sleep, appetite, and cognitive function. This condition is characterized by aberrant synthesis, release, reuptake, or receptor sensitivity of serotonin, leading to clinical manifestations such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or migraine headaches. Given the reciprocal relationship between serotonin and numerous endocrine hormones, this dysregulation is often a key factor in mood disorders associated with hormonal transitions.
