SERM

Meaning

SERM is an acronym for Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, a class of synthetic compounds that act on the estrogen receptor (ER) in a tissue-selective manner, exhibiting agonist activity in some tissues and antagonist activity in others. These pharmacological agents are clinically significant because they can provide the beneficial effects of estrogen, such as bone density preservation, while mitigating potential risks, like stimulating breast or uterine tissue. SERMs are widely used in hormonal health for the treatment of breast cancer, osteoporosis, and sometimes to manage certain aspects of hormonal balance in men and women. Their selective action allows for a more nuanced and targeted hormonal intervention.
