SERM-induced Maculopathy

Meaning

SERM-induced maculopathy is a specific, vision-threatening adverse event characterized by structural changes to the macula of the retina, caused by the use of certain Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), particularly tamoxifen. This condition manifests as crystalline deposits, macular edema, or other retinal changes, leading to visual acuity reduction or field defects. It is a serious but rare complication requiring immediate cessation of the causative medication and prompt ophthalmological intervention.
