Serialization

Meaning

Serialization, in the pharmaceutical and compounding industry, is the regulated process of assigning a unique, traceable code to each individual unit of a product, such as a bottle, vial, or blister pack of medication. This process creates a distinct digital fingerprint for every product, enabling end-to-end tracking and verification throughout the entire supply chain, from the initial manufacturer to the final dispensing pharmacy. Clinically, serialization is a critical regulatory requirement designed to combat the circulation of counterfeit drugs, enhance product security, and ensure the authenticity and integrity of all dispensed therapeutic agents, including sensitive hormone therapies.
