Sensory Deprivation

Meaning

Sensory deprivation is the intentional reduction or elimination of external sensory input—such as sight, sound, and touch—to the nervous system. This state is often achieved in controlled environments, like floatation tanks, to induce profound relaxation and alter states of consciousness. Clinically, it is utilized as a therapeutic tool to modulate the autonomic nervous system, reduce hyperarousal, and decrease the chronic output of stress hormones like cortisol. The resulting deep rest can facilitate nervous system optimization and hormonal recovery.
