Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP)

Meaning

The Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP) is a complex biological state characterized by senescent cells—those that have permanently ceased dividing—secreting a potent mixture of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and proteases into the surrounding tissue microenvironment. This persistent, detrimental secretion contributes significantly to chronic low-grade inflammation, tissue dysfunction, and the propagation of aging-related pathologies throughout the body. The SASP is a key mechanism linking cellular aging to systemic health decline and hormonal dysregulation.
