Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System

Meaning

A Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SEDDS) is an advanced pharmaceutical formulation consisting of a drug dissolved in an isotropic mixture of oils, surfactants, and co-solvents. Upon contact with the aqueous environment of the gastrointestinal tract, this system spontaneously forms a fine, stable emulsion. The primary clinical utility of SEDDS is to significantly enhance the oral bioavailability of highly lipophilic, poorly water-soluble drugs, including many steroid hormones and specific peptide analogs.
