Selenium in Follicles

Meaning

Selenium in Follicles refers to the essential presence and critical role of the trace element selenium within the ovarian follicular fluid, which is the immediate microenvironment surrounding the developing oocyte. Selenium is indispensable in this location because it is an obligatory component of selenoproteins, most notably the potent antioxidant enzymes known as glutathione peroxidases (GPx). Adequate follicular selenium levels are necessary to protect the developing egg and its surrounding granulosa cells from the damaging effects of oxidative stress, a major contributor to poor oocyte quality and reproductive aging.
