Selenium Deficiency

Meaning

Selenium deficiency is a clinical condition resulting from inadequate intake or absorption of the essential trace mineral selenium, leading to impaired function of selenium-dependent enzymes known as selenoproteins. This deficiency can compromise antioxidant defense, thyroid hormone metabolism, and immune function, all of which are critical for systemic health. Given selenium’s vital role in the synthesis of key thyroid enzymes, its deficiency is clinically linked to thyroid dysfunction and increased oxidative stress.
