Selenium and Deiodinase

Meaning

Selenium is an essential trace mineral, while deiodinases are a family of selenoenzymes crucial for thyroid hormone metabolism. These enzymes facilitate the conversion of inactive thyroxine (T4) into its biologically active form, triiodothyronine (T3), and also regulate the inactivation of thyroid hormones. Their combined action is fundamental for maintaining euthyroid status within the body’s various tissues.
