Selective Receptor Agonism

Meaning

Selective Receptor Agonism describes the pharmacological property where an exogenous agent preferentially activates one specific subtype of a receptor while having minimal or no effect on other closely related subtypes. This selectivity is crucial in complex systems like the endocrine network to achieve a desired therapeutic outcome without triggering unwanted off-target effects mediated by other receptor isoforms. We seek to isolate beneficial signaling pathways. This contrasts sharply with non-selective agonists.
