Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators

Meaning

Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs) are a class of therapeutic agents designed to treat estrogen-sensitive conditions, primarily certain forms of breast cancer, by binding to the estrogen receptor (ER) and promoting its degradation. Unlike Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), which can act as either agonists or antagonists depending on the tissue, SERDs function as pure antagonists in all tissues and actively reduce the total number of available estrogen receptors. This mechanism effectively removes the target for estrogen signaling, offering a potent strategy for blocking proliferative hormonal effects. They represent a key advance in precision hormonal therapy with a clear anti-estrogenic profile.
