Sedentary Phenotype

Meaning

The Sedentary Phenotype is a discernible and adverse set of physiological and metabolic characteristics that systematically manifest in an individual due to prolonged and chronic periods of physical inactivity. This measurable phenotype is marked by detrimental biological adaptations, including significantly reduced tissue insulin sensitivity, chronic low-grade systemic inflammation, unfavorable alterations in hormonal profiles, and increased visceral fat accumulation. It represents a state of profound biological de-conditioning that independently and significantly accelerates the risk of cardiometabolic and other chronic diseases.
