Sedentary Metabolic Dysfunction

Meaning

Sedentary Metabolic Dysfunction describes a cluster of adverse physiological and hormonal derangements that arise as a direct consequence of prolonged physical inactivity, independent of dietary intake. This state is characterized by decreased insulin sensitivity, impaired lipid metabolism, and chronic low-grade inflammation, all of which contribute to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. The clinical recognition of this dysfunction highlights that insufficient movement is an independent, primary driver of poor metabolic and hormonal health.
