Sedentary Behavior

Meaning

Sedentary behavior is scientifically defined as any waking activity characterized by an energy expenditure of 1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs) or less, typically performed while sitting, reclining, or lying down. This state of prolonged muscular quiescence is a critical health concern distinct from simply not meeting physical activity guidelines. Clinically, excessive sedentary time is recognized as an independent, modifiable risk factor for numerous adverse metabolic and hormonal dysregulations, including insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.
