Section 503a Food

Meaning

Refers to the section of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) that establishes the conditions under which a compounding pharmacy may legally prepare compounded medications for individual patients pursuant to a prescription. Critically, this section strictly prohibits compounding pharmacies from distributing or selling drugs that are essentially copies of commercially available products. The term “Food” in the context of the act is a historical anomaly and does not refer to dietary products.
