Secretor Status

Meaning

Secretor status is a genetically determined characteristic that dictates whether an individual secretes ABO blood group antigens into their body fluids, such as saliva, tears, and gastrointestinal mucus. Individuals classified as “secretors” possess a functional FUT2 gene, while “non-secretors” have two non-functional copies. This status holds relevance in hormonal health and wellness because it profoundly influences the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome, which is intrinsically linked to the enterohepatic recirculation and metabolic clearance of steroid hormones like estrogen.
