Secretagogue

Meaning

A secretagogue is a substance that actively stimulates the secretion of another substance, typically a hormone or a digestive fluid, by acting directly on the secretory cell. In endocrinology, this term is commonly applied to a class of compounds, including specific peptides, that prompt the pituitary gland to release its stored hormones. For example, growth hormone-releasing peptides function as secretagogues by stimulating the pulsatile release of endogenous growth hormone. This mechanism is therapeutically leveraged to restore or optimize hormonal function without directly replacing the final hormone product.
