Secondary Osteoporosis

Meaning

Secondary osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration, which is a direct consequence of an underlying disease, medical condition, or the chronic use of certain medications. Unlike primary osteoporosis, which is typically age-related or postmenopausal, this form is attributable to a specific, identifiable cause that disrupts normal bone remodeling. Identifying the secondary cause is paramount for effective clinical management and treatment. Many endocrine disorders can be the root cause of this condition.
