Secondary Hypothyroidism

Meaning

Secondary Hypothyroidism is a form of underactive thyroid disorder characterized by insufficient stimulation of the thyroid gland due to a deficiency in Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) secretion from the pituitary gland. Unlike primary hypothyroidism, where the dysfunction lies within the thyroid gland itself, the secondary form indicates a failure at the level of the pituitary or, less commonly, the hypothalamus (tertiary hypothyroidism). Clinically, this requires careful differentiation, as the TSH level, a key diagnostic marker, will be inappropriately low or normal in the face of low free thyroid hormones (T4 and T3).
