Secondary Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Secondary Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism defines a clinical state where the gonads, specifically the testes in males or ovaries in females, exhibit diminished function in producing sex hormones due to a deficiency in the stimulating hormones released by the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. This condition is termed “secondary” because the primary dysfunction originates upstream in the brain’s endocrine centers, not within the gonads themselves. It indicates insufficient secretion of gonadotropins, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), which are essential for gonadal steroidogenesis.
