Second Neoplasm

Meaning

A Second Neoplasm, or Second Primary Cancer, is the development of a new, distinct, and unrelated malignant tumor in a patient who has previously been diagnosed with and treated for a primary cancer. This diagnosis is separate from a recurrence or metastasis of the original cancer. The occurrence of a second neoplasm is a significant clinical consideration in long-term survivorship, particularly when previous treatment involved chemotherapy, radiation, or certain hormonal agents.
