Second Messenger Cascades

Meaning

The intricate sequence of intracellular signaling events triggered when an extracellular hormone or ligand binds to a receptor on the cell surface, translating the external signal into a specific internal cellular response. These cascades involve a rapid, sequential activation of small, non-protein molecules, such as cyclic AMP (cAMP) or calcium ions, which amplify the initial signal and execute a vast array of cellular functions. They are the fundamental language through which many peptide and amine hormones exert their rapid biological effects.
