Sebum Production

Meaning

Sebum Production is the physiological process by which sebaceous glands, appendages of the pilosebaceous unit, secrete sebum, a lipid-rich substance that lubricates the skin and hair shaft. This process is highly sensitive to fluctuations in circulating sex hormones, particularly androgens, serving as a visible biomarker for endocrine activity. Excessive production often correlates with androgenic excess.
