Sebocytes

Meaning

Sebocytes are specialized epithelial cells found within the sebaceous glands of the skin, primarily responsible for the biosynthesis and secretion of sebum, a complex lipid mixture. These cells undergo a process of terminal differentiation, accumulating lipids within their cytoplasm before disintegrating to release their contents onto the skin surface or into the hair follicle. The unique cellular composition allows for the continuous production of this vital epidermal component.
