Sebaceous Glands

Meaning

Sebaceous glands are microscopic exocrine glands in the skin that secrete an oily, waxy substance called sebum, which is crucial for lubricating the skin and hair and providing a protective barrier against moisture loss and microbial invasion. These glands are intimately associated with hair follicles and are found over most of the body, with the highest concentration on the face, scalp, and chest. The activity and size of the sebaceous glands are highly sensitive to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the levels of androgens. Dysregulation of these glands is a primary factor in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris and seborrheic dermatitis.
