Sebaceous Gland Activity

Meaning

Sebaceous gland activity refers to the physiological process of synthesizing and secreting sebum, a complex lipid mixture composed of triglycerides, wax esters, and squalene, by the sebaceous glands located in the dermis. The rate of this activity is a major determinant of skin and hair oiliness, playing a role in barrier function, hydration, and the development of acne vulgaris. This glandular function is highly sensitive to hormonal regulation, particularly by androgens.
