SCFA Signaling

Meaning

The complex communication pathways initiated by short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—primarily acetate, propionate, and butyrate—which are metabolites produced by the bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber in the colon. This signaling involves SCFAs acting as ligands for G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) on host cells, and as modulators of gene expression via histone deacetylase inhibition. This is a key mechanism linking the gut microbiome to systemic metabolic and immune function.
