SCAPs

Meaning

SCAPs, or Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein (SREBP) Cleavage-Activating Proteins, represent a class of crucial intracellular membrane proteins that function as cholesterol sensors within eukaryotic cells. They are fundamental regulators of lipid homeostasis, specifically controlling the activation of SREBPs, which are transcription factors governing the synthesis of cholesterol, fatty acids, and triglycerides. This regulatory action directly influences the cellular availability of lipids essential for various biological processes.
