Satellite Cells

Meaning

Satellite cells are a population of quiescent, mononucleated muscle stem cells located between the basal lamina and the plasma membrane of mature muscle fibers, representing the primary cellular source for skeletal muscle regeneration and repair. These cells are essential for muscle plasticity, enabling hypertrophy in response to mechanical load and facilitating tissue healing following injury. Their function is highly sensitive to systemic hormonal and metabolic signals.
