Sarcoplasmic Volume Expansion

Meaning

Sarcoplasmic Volume Expansion refers to an increase in the volume of the sarcoplasm, the non-contractile fluid and organelles within a muscle fiber, without a proportional increase in the contractile myofibrillar proteins. This expansion is primarily driven by an increase in intracellular fluid, glycogen, and non-contractile proteins, leading to an increase in overall muscle size or cellular swelling. It is a form of muscle hypertrophy distinct from myofibrillar hypertrophy, which focuses on contractile protein density.
