Sarcoplasmic Reticulum ATPase

Meaning

Sarcoplasmic Reticulum ATPase, commonly known as SERCA, is a specialized transmembrane enzyme located in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) of muscle cells, where it plays a critical role in muscle relaxation. It functions as a powerful calcium pump, actively sequestering calcium ions from the cytosol back into the SR lumen. This rapid removal of calcium is the decisive event that terminates muscle contraction and prepares the fiber for the next cycle. SERCA activity is essential for both the speed and force of muscle performance.
